Last August 31, 2024, The Nexus (NX), the official student publication of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS), conducted its first Journalism Workshop at the Peter G. Nepomuceno (PGN) 310 case room.
With the theme, “Pluma: Tamang Paggamit ng Tinta,” the workshop aims to train student journalists in the proper use of their writing skills and enhance their knowledge in the basic journalism categories, as stated in their announcement post.
The workshop included sessions about ethics in the field and news writing, which were discussed by Joaquin Villareal, the editor-in-chief of The Enterprise, the official student publication of the School of Business and Accountancy (SBA). Another session was held for feature writing, presented by Rise Lozano, the former feature editor of NX.
The speakers commented during their discussions on the importance of such topics and saw eagerness for growth in each attendee whenever question-and-answer segments would occur.
During Lozano’s session, she allowed the students to write various feature headlines, which Dylan Aguilar, a first-year BA Communication student, commended in his interview with NX.
“It was an immersive experience all throughout, especially when it was time for us to use the information we got to the test.” Aguilar expressed.
Meanwhile, Nicolai Tuazon, a first-year student in BS Psychology, suggested expanding the range of speakers to more categories.
“I would suggest including more speakers to cover a wider range of topics. Since journalism encompasses a lot of categories, it would be beneficial to have discussions on these different aspects to give participants a broader appreciation and understanding of the field or other categories.” Tuazon elaborated.
Icebreakers were also included to get to know the students and speakers better as well as form a bond with each other as the event progressed. “The workshop was both insightful and fun. Despite the small number of attendees, the hosts kept the energy up and made the experience engaging. I learned a lot and truly had fun throughout the event.” Tuazon added. This was spearheaded by Kayel Salvador, the managing editor of the publication, and Justin Panlilio, a Literary and Kapampangan staff writer.
