SAS Department welcomes its new Dean

by Katherine Santillan | August 18, 2023

Dr. Alfredo B. Santos officially took the position as the new Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) The transition of the administration had already been initiated during the month of July and the office made the necessary adjustments.

In an interview with Dr. Santos, he explained that the transfer of position was offered by the OIC President Leopoldo Valdes during the beginning of July as the former dean, Dr. Janette Rodriguez, took up a position under Holy Angel University’s School of Professional Education in Lifelong Learning (HAU-SPELL).

Dr. Santos noted that for this term, there would be little to no immediate changes in the academic plans provided by the former dean.

“I am happy, na nagkaroon ako ng pagkakataon to serve the college [SAS Department]” Dr. Santos said, “I really volunteered for this task, from the time the president called us, sinagut ku (I answered), kayabe da kayu guys [students] (I’m with you, guys [students]).”

Subsequently, the Nexus reached out to interview Dr. Rodriguez for her role in the situation. The former Dean ensured a smooth transition, and is currently guiding Dr. Santos through the operations. One of the plans she proactively prepared was the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) accreditation of the Bachelor of Arts in Communication (BA Comm) in the SAS Department, which she announced that the university is up for visitation by the last week of September.

Dr. Rodriguez also prepared a new curriculum in a graduate school, specifically the Masters in Digital Marketing Communication wherein the term started its first semester.

The former dean extended her gratitude towards the students, the faculty, and staff within the department. Rodriguez recognized the challenges throughout her term especially during the pandemic but remarked that it was still fruitful and productive, she then listed the projects implemented on her term such as the revised curriculum of the psychology programs, synthesis in psychology, mock board examinations, and practicum requirements.

“I’m just very grateful that my 4 years here [in the SAS department] has been well spent,” Dr. Rodriguez said, “…because of the constant communication, meeting with parents, and of course our students and faculty members, we were able to manage all these challenges altogether. The journey has been very meaningful and significant for me.”

When asked regarding the process of finding a candidate for the new SAS Dean, both figures explained that Valdes searched for professors in the university that are willing to take on the position, and Dr. Santos heed the call.

The new dean formally introduced himself to the SAS students during the department’s General Assembly on August 14, 2023. He was initially announced by Marvin Viado through the Communicators’ League group chat before the semester started.

Dr. Alfredo Santos was part of the social sciences faculty before becoming the Dean, and has been serving the university for 25 years.
