Fifty one years ago, former president and dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos Sr. signed Proclamation No. 1081, imposing the “Martial Law," which led the Philippines to face its darkest chapter in history.
The grim shadow of this declaration continues to hunt heavily among Filipinos, as we are hauntingly reminded of the tyranny exerted by Marcos and his administration. Numerous journalists, activists, and the entirety of the media were silenced as the government proceeded to watch the bloodshed of their countrymen.
During this time, we remember the arrest, torture, and death of many Filipinos while the Marcos family lived their lavish lifestyles, catered by the billions of wealth they had stolen.
Beneath shadows over history's page, Dictator’s iron grip did engage, A nation held in trembling fear, As tyranny drew ever near
Pitch black nights, where freedoms fell, Where whispers dared not break the spell, The blood of martyrs stains the streets, Their tales cast the regime’s betrayal
In dim-lit cells, where voices hushed, Where dreams of liberty lay crushed, The price of freedom, paid in red, As the cry for justice echoes stead
Yet in the darkness, justice shall prevail, Remnants of yesterday’s bound to be unveiled, For even beneath oppressive skies, The human spirit still defies
With each drop of the crimson shed, The truth in hearts cannot be thwarted, In remembrance of our gravest peril, Their sacrifice paves freedom's trail
Let not their stories fade to dust, Persist to resist, their verity shall last, Keep the flame of justice’s enduring light, And never yield to endless nights.
